ラングストン・ヒューズの”The Negro Speaks of Rivers”を自分で訳してみた。
「川について黒人が語ったこと」 （ラングストン・ヒューズ）
いろんな川を私は知ってきた。
この世と同じぐらい昔から、血管の中を流れる血よりも古くから、いろんな川を。
私の心は川のように深く育ってきた。
まだ夜明けになったばかりの頃、私はユーフラテス川で水浴びをした。
ナイル川を眺め、その上にピラミッドを建てたものだ。
コンゴのあたりでは小屋を建て、そこでぐっすり眠った。
エイブ・リンカーンがニューオリンズへ川を下っていく時には、ミシシッピ川の歌を聞いたものだ。
そして、その泥の水面が夕日で黄金に変わるのを見た。
いろんな川を私は知ってきた。
古くからの、黒い川を。
私の心は川のように深く育ってきた。

I've known rivers:
I've known rivers ancient as the world and older than the
flow of human blood in human veins.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln
went down to New Orleans, and I've seen its muddy
bosom turn all golden in the sunset.
I've known rivers:
Ancient, dusky rivers.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
